How the effect works

A film camera is a light-tight box, and the moment it stops being light-tight you get a light leak: a streak of orange or magenta burned across the frame where daylight crept past a perished door seal. For decades that was a fault. Now it is the single most recognisable signal that a photograph came from film, which is why the leak controls here are the heart of the effect rather than an afterthought.

The other giveaway is halation. Film emulsion sits on a clear base, and bright highlights scatter light through that base and bounce back, wrapping a soft red-orange glow around anything very bright — a window, a street lamp, a bright sky behind a subject. Digital sensors do not do this; they clip cleanly. Lifting the blacks and warming the midtones reproduces the rest: colour negative film never reaches true black, and its dyes shift warm as they age.

The leak, leak size and leak hue controls place and colour that streak, while lift raises the black point and warmth pushes the amber cast. Grain goes on last, because on real film the grain is in the emulsion and therefore under nothing.
